8-Day Morocco Desert Tour from Fes

DAY 1: Fez in Arrival 

Your Moroccan adventure begins as you land at Fez airport. Our driver will be waiting for you there. He will greet you warmly at the arrivals hall. Subsequently, he will transport you to your hotel. The journey into the city offers your first glimpses of Moroccan life. You will have free time to rest. This helps you recover from your long journey.

In the afternoon, you can begin exploring the area. The surroundings near the hotel offer a gentle introduction. A short walk through the local streets is a good start. Consequently, you start to acclimatize to Moroccan culture. The sounds, smells, and colours begin to surround you. Dinner and overnight will be in Fez.

DAY 2: Fez – Fez el‑Bali – Madrasas – Tanneries – Al‑Qarawiyyin – Souks – Mellah

After breakfast, we will begin a full day of exploration. Our focus today is the imperial city. The Medina of Fez el‑Bali is our main destination. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During our visit, we will see the famous Quranic madrasas. Their intricate tilework and carved cedar are breathtaking. Moreover, we will witness the traditional tanneries. Workers there dye hides in giant stone vats. Nearby stands the Al‑Qarawiyyin Mosque.

It is a symbol of Islamic learning. Lunch will be at a typical restaurant. It is located in the heart of the Medina. In the afternoon, we explore the colourful souks. You can browse spices, textiles, and brassware there. Subsequently, we visit the Jewish Quarter, known as the Mellah. You will have free time for shopping. Thereafter, we return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight remain in Fez.

DAY 3: Fez – Ifrane – Azrou Cedar Forest – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

We depart in the morning towards the vast Sahara desert. Our first stop is Ifrane. This town is known as the “Moroccan Switzerland”. Its unique alpine architecture is surprising. Then we continue to Azrou. Here we visit the magnificent cedar forest. You can observe wild Barbary macaques there. They play among the ancient trees. Lunch is served in Midelt. This town lies in the heart of the Atlas Mountains.

In the afternoon, we cross the dramatic Ziz Gorge. The views are spectacular and sweeping. Moreover, we drive through the vast Tafilalet palm grove. Thousands of date palms stretch below us. We arrive in Merzouga at sunset. Consequently, you see the dunes glowing in warm orange light. Dinner and overnight will be in a hotel. It overlooks the magnificent Erg Chebbi dunes.

DAY 4: Merzouga – Erg Chebbi – Khamlia – Nomadic Families – Camel Trek – Luxury Camp

This entire day is dedicated to exploring the Merzouga region. Our first destination is the village of Khamlia. There, we experience the fascinating Gnawa culture. Its spiritual music is deeply captivating. Afterwards, we take a 4×4 tour of the desert surroundings. We find a hidden oasis in the arid landscape. Moreover, we visit nomadic areas. We meet Berber families in their tents. A picnic lunch is served in a picturesque location.

The scenery provides a perfect backdrop. In the late afternoon, we take a camel trek. We ride gently into the heart of the Erg Chebbi. Subsequently, we admire a stunning desert sunset. The colours shift from gold to deep purple. Dinner and overnight are in a luxury desert camp. The starry night sky is absolutely unforgettable. A campfire and drums complete the magical evening.

DAY 5: Merzouga – Tinjdad – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

Wake up early to witness a beautiful sunrise. The first light paints the dunes in soft pink and gold. After breakfast at camp, we depart for Tinjdad. Then we continue towards the spectacular Todra Gorges. Massive limestone cliffs tower overhead. They rise 300 metres on both sides. We park and hike between the sheer walls.

The canyon floor is cool and shaded. Lunch is enjoyed on site, surrounded by nature. In the afternoon, we drive into the Dades Valley. Its winding roads offer panoramic views. The unusual “Monkey Fingers” rock formations stand proudly. Dinner and overnight are in the valley. The scenery is breathtakingly serene.

DAY 6: Dades Valley – Valley of Roses – Skoura – Ouarzazate – Aït Benhaddou – Tizi n’Tichka – Marrakech

After breakfast, we head toward Ouarzazate. This city is known as the “Hollywood of Africa”. Our route first passes through the Valley of the Roses. Every spring, the hillsides bloom with pink petals. In addition, we cross the vast Skoura palm grove. Then we reach the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. First, we visit the Cinema Museum in Ouarzazate. We learn about the region’s film history. Thereafter, we have a leisurely lunch.

Subsequently, we explore the famous Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. This ancient fortified ksar is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has starred in countless Hollywood films. We cross the river on foot. We wander through its narrow alleyways. Afterwards, we drive through the High Atlas Mountains. We stop for photos at the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. The views from 2,260 metres are spectacular. Consequently, we continue our descent. We arrive in vibrant Marrakech by evening.

DAY 7: Marrakech – Menara Gardens – Bahia Palace – Saadian Tombs – Koutoubia – Souks – Jemaa el‑Fnaa

Today is a full day of visits in Marrakech. A knowledgeable local guide accompanies us. We start at the Menara Gardens. These tranquil olive groves offer peaceful views. Then we visit the magnificent Bahia Palace. Its zellij tilework and carved cedar ceilings dazzle us. Moreover, we see the Saadian Tombs. Their marble decorations are exquisite.

After that, we view the Koutoubia Mosque from the outside. Its towering minaret dominates the skyline. Subsequently, we experience the vibrant Jemaa el‑Fna Square. Storytellers, musicians, and food stalls create a carnival. Lunch is at a traditional restaurant nearby. In the afternoon, we explore the colourful souks. We hunt for lanterns, ceramics, and leather goods. Dinner and overnight remain in Marrakech. The city’s energy is absolutely infectious.

DAY 8: Marrakech – Souks – Airport – Departure
